The IEP is designed to prepare students to succeed at an American high school, college, university or in professional environment. Through their studies, IEP Students develop their ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English. Students are also taught study, research and presentation skills will help maximize performance in their future academic and business careers.
Intercultural communication is an integral part of the curriculum. Students learn to successfully negotiate meaning across cultures while becoming more comfortable with American culture. Many of our students continue their studies at Manatee Community College or other colleges and universities across the United States.
There are three start dates per year. Courses are semester length (approximately 15 – 19 weeks). Classes are held Monday through Friday from 1 – 5 p.m.
The IEP Program consists of the following subject areas:
Reading and Vocabulary (one hour per day)
Students expand vocabulary through reading and writing activities. Students read and discuss high-interest texts on current topics and use the vocabulary and structures they learn to help develop their written communication skills in a variety of situations.
Listening and Speaking (one hour per day)
Students develop listening strategies, practice conversational skills and improve pronunciation, fluency and accuracy. Activities and assignments are designed to improve spoken English and listening, and the understanding and use of idiomatic expressions. Extensive use is made of video, audio and Internet resources.
Integrated Skills (two hours per day)
This class emphasizes the integration of speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills that contribute to successful communication. Language skills are quickly developed through dynamic and communicative projects which utilize the computer lab, the Internet and other media.
Junior Program (Ages 9 - 13)
The program is designed to help students prepare for entry into an American middle or high school. The curriculum is content-based, so themes in science, social studies, history, geography and literature are studied through the medium of English.
There are three start dates per year. Courses are semester length (approximately 15 – 19 weeks). Classes are held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
The Junior IEP Program has the following learning objectives:
- Improving oral and written communication skills
- Developing critical thinking and reasoning skills
- Familiarizing students with content vocabulary in science, social studies, history, geography and literature
